Target Information
Synaptophysin is a calcium-binding integral membrane glycoprotein found in presynaptic vesicles of nearly all neurons. It possesses four transmembrane domains and forms a complex with dynamin at high calcium concentrations, suggesting a role in synaptic vesicle endocytosis. Additionally, it participates in regulating short- and long-term synaptic plasticity. Synaptophysin is widely used as a marker for nerve terminals and in distinguishing neuroendocrine tumors. Mutations in this gene are associated with mental retardation, X-linked 96.
