Target Information

This gene encodes the receptor for type 1 gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRHR). It belongs to the seven-transmembrane, G-protein coupled receptor (GPCR) family and is expressed on pituitary gonadotrope cells, lymphocytes, breast, ovary, and prostate tissues.
Upon binding gonadotropin-releasing hormone, the receptor activates a phosphatidylinositol-calcium second messenger system, leading to the release of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH).
Defects in this gene can cause hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (HH).
Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants, with more than 18 transcription initiation sites in the 5′ region and multiple polyA signals in the 3′ region identified.
