Target Information
IL12B (IL-12 p40) encodes a subunit of interleukin 12, a cytokine that acts on T and natural killer cells and has diverse biological activities. Interleukin 12 is a disulfide-linked heterodimer composed of a 40 kDa subunit (encoded by IL12B) and a 35 kDa subunit (encoded by IL12A).
This cytokine is expressed by activated macrophages and is crucial for Th1 cell development and maintenance of memory/effector Th1 cells for long-term immune protection.
Overexpression of IL12B has been observed in the central nervous system of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), suggesting its role in disease pathogenesis. Promoter polymorphisms of this gene have also been associated with asthma severity in children.
