Target Information
Amyloid Precursor Protein (APP), also known as Amyloid beta precursor protein, functions as a cell surface kinesin I membrane receptor mediating axonal transport of beta-secretase and presenilin 1. APP is crucial for neurite growth, neuronal adhesion, and axonogenesis. It is a 100–140 kDa transmembrane glycoprotein existing as several isoforms due to alternative splicing. Proteolytic cleavage by beta- and gamma-secretases generates beta amyloid, the primary component of senile plaques—one of the major histopathologic features of Alzheimer’s disease. Abnormal APP regulation and processing are implicated in Down’s syndrome, early onset familial Alzheimer’s disease, and cerebral hemorrhage.
