Target Information
Elliptocytosis is a hematologic disorder characterized by elliptically shaped erythrocytes and varying degrees of hemolytic anemia. It is inherited as an autosomal dominant trait and results from mutations in genes encoding proteins of the red cell membrane skeleton. The form linked to the Rh blood group has been shown to be caused by a defect in protein 4.1. Rh-unlinked forms of elliptocytosis are caused by mutations in the alpha-spectrin, beta-spectrin, or band 3 genes.
