Target Information
IL-6 encodes a cytokine involved in inflammation and B cell maturation. The protein acts as an endogenous pyrogen, inducing fever in autoimmune or infectious conditions. It is expressed at sites of acute and chronic inflammation, secreted into serum, and activates transcriptional inflammatory responses via the interleukin 6 receptor alpha.
IL-6 function is linked to various inflammation-associated diseases, including diabetes mellitus and systemic juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Elevated IL-6 levels are also observed in viral infections such as COVID-19.
Diseases associated with IL-6 include Kaposi Sarcoma and Systemic Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis.
