Target Information
FTO is a novel protein and a member of the non-heme dioxygenase (Fe(II)- and 2-oxoglutarate-dependent dioxygenases) superfamily. Amino acid conservation patterns support this hypothesis and indicate that both 2-oxoglutarate and iron are important for FTO function. Although not much is yet known about FTO, it is thought that the protein may modify the activity of genes involved in metabolism and fat storage, potentially influencing a person’s risk of obesity.
