Target Information
Keratins are intermediate filament proteins responsible for the structural integrity of epithelial cells, subdivided into epithelial and hair keratins. The Keratin 80 gene encodes a type II epithelial keratin, structurally similar to hair keratins. It plays a role in cell differentiation, localizing near desmosomal plaques in early stages and dispersing throughout the cytoplasm in terminal differentiation. Type II keratins are clustered in chromosome 12q13. Two transcript variants encoding fully functional isoforms have been identified.
