Target Information
Calpain proteinases are papain-like neutral proteases activated by calcium. Calpains 1 and 2 consist of a large active subunit and a smaller enhancer subunit (calpain-4). Other calpains (5–15) do not require a small subunit. Calpain-7 differs from typical calpains as it lacks the EF-hand calcium-binding domain and instead possesses a domain resembling domain-III, with unclear function. Calpain-7 is broadly expressed across tissues.
