Synaptotagmins are a large gene family of synaptic vesicle type III integral membrane proteins that regulate exocytosis and endocytosis, playing a key role in neurotransmitter secretion from small secretory vesicles.
- Synaptotagmin I: Calcium binding triggers neurotransmitter release at the synapse.
- Synaptotagmin II: Phosphorylated by WNK1, regulating calcium-dependent interactions.
- Synaptotagmin III: Involved in calcium-dependent exocytosis of secretory vesicles in endocrine cells and neurons.
- Synaptotagmin IV: Expressed in neuronal tissues, highly in hippocampus; linked to psychiatric disorder markers.
