Target Information

CD34 is a highly glycosylated monomeric surface protein (111–115 kDa) expressed on various stem cell populations. It functions as a stem cell marker and may act as a surface receptor involved in endocytosis, adhesion, differentiation, and proliferation of hematopoietic stem cells. CD34 expression represents specific stages of hematopoietic development and may mediate attachment of stem cells to the bone marrow extracellular matrix or stromal cells. It could also serve as a scaffold for lineage-specific glycans, facilitating binding to lectins in the marrow environment. The intracellular domain is phosphorylated by activated protein kinase C, indicating a potential role in signal transduction. CD34 dysfunction has been associated with dermatofibrosarcoma and neurofibroma.
