Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the glutathione peroxidase family, which catalyzes the reduction of hydrogen peroxide, organic hydroperoxides, and lipid hydroperoxides, protecting cells from oxidative damage. Several isozymes exist in vertebrates with varying cellular locations and substrate specificities. Expression has been observed in embryos and olfactory epithelium, although the precise function is not fully known. In humans, this isozyme is a selenoprotein containing selenocysteine (Sec) at its active site, encoded by the UGA codon. The 3′ UTRs of selenoprotein mRNAs contain a conserved SECIS element that allows UGA to be recognized as a Sec codon rather than a stop signal. In mouse and rat orthologs, this residue is replaced by cysteine (Cys), and their mRNAs lack the SECIS element.
