Adenylate kinases (AK) are a family of structurally and functionally related enzymes that catalyze the reaction:
MgNTP + AMP = MgNDP + ADP (N = A or G)
These enzymes maintain homeostasis of adenine and guanine nucleotide pools.
- AK1: Cytosolic enzyme, uses ATP as substrate
- AK2: Located in mitochondrial intermembrane space, catalyzes same reaction as AK1
- AK3: Present in mitochondrial matrix, prefers GTP over ATP as substrate
