CYP24A1 유전자는 cytochrome P450 초과가족에 속하는 효소를 암호화합니다. 이 단백질은 약물 대사 및 콜레스테롤, 스테로이드, 기타 지질 합성에 관여하는 monooxygenase로 작용합니다. 미토콘드리아 단백질로서 활성형 비타민 D3(1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3)의 측쇄를 수산화하여 분해를 시작하며, 비타민 D3 수준 조절을 통해 칼슘 항상성과 비타민 D 내분비계에 중요한 역할을 합니다. 이 유전자는 다양한 아이소폼을 암호화하는 전사체 변이체를 포함합니다.
