Target Information

CD83 is a 40–45 kDa glycoprotein expressed by peripheral blood dendritic cells. Peripheral lymphocytes can express low levels of CD83 after stimulation with agents such as Con A or PHA.
In immunohistology, CD83 is strongly expressed by interfollicular interdigitating reticulum cells and weakly by cells within germinal centers. It is also expressed by Langerhans cells in the skin.

The CD83 antigen is a 186-amino-acid single-chain glycoprotein, a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily. It includes:

  • An extracellular V-type Ig-like domain
  • A transmembrane region
  • A short, ~40-amino-acid cytoplasmic tail

CD83 undergoes extensive post-translational glycosylation, resulting in a molecular weight approximately twice that of the predicted core protein.
CD83⁺ cells display a unique immunophenotype distinct from T, B, NK, or myelomonocytic lineages, co-expressing high levels of MHC class II and markers such as CD2, CD5, CD40, CD78, CD13, CD33, CD36, and various cytokine receptors.

Diseases associated with CD83 dysfunction include plague and Rift Valley Fever.
