Target Information
The SMN complex plays a catalytic role in the assembly of small nuclear ribonucleoproteins (snRNPs), which are essential components of the spliceosome. It is involved in the splicing of cellular pre-mRNAs. Most spliceosomal snRNPs contain a common set of Sm proteins (SNRPB, SNRPD1, SNRPD2, SNRPD3, SNRPE, SNRPF, and SNRPG) that form a heptameric ring on the Sm site of small nuclear RNA to create the core snRNP. In the cytosol, Sm proteins are held in an inactive 6S pICln-Sm complex by chaperone CLNS1A. The SMN complex dissociates CLNS1A and transfers Sm proteins to form SMN-Sm complexes, initiating core snRNP assembly and nuclear transport.
