Target Information
The OPRM1 gene encodes the mu opioid receptor, which is the primary site of action for commonly used opioids such as morphine, heroin, fentanyl, and methadone. It also serves as the main receptor for endogenous opioid peptides including beta-endorphin and enkephalins. The OPRM1 receptor belongs to the G protein-coupled receptor family and is one of three main opioid receptor types—mu, kappa, and delta—each with distinct pharmacologic profiles.
