Target Information
Na⁺/H⁺ exchangers (NHE) are plasma membrane intrinsic proteins mediating exchange of Na⁺ and H⁺ ions in various tissues. They play a critical role in maintaining intracellular pH, Na⁺ absorption, cell volume regulation, and possibly cell proliferation.
Seven NHE isoforms (NHE1–7) have been cloned, all sharing similar primary structures with 10–12 predicted transmembrane domains.
NHE7 (human 725 aa, chromosome Xp11.4) is ubiquitously expressed, predominantly localized to the trans-Golgi network, and mediates Na⁺ or K⁺ influx in exchange for H⁺. It shares ~70% similarity with NHE6 and ~25% with other NHEs.
