Olfactory receptors interact with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate a neuronal response that triggers the perception of smell. These receptors are part of the large G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) family, which originates from single coding-exon genes. They share a seven-transmembrane domain structure common to many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and are responsible for odorant recognition and G protein-mediated signal transduction. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome. The nomenclature of olfactory receptor genes and proteins is organism-specific.
