Carnitine acetyltransferase (CRAT)는 미토콘드리아, 퍼옥시좀 및 소포체에서 대사 경로의 핵심 효소로 작용합니다. CRAT는 아실-CoA 티오에스터로부터 카르니틴으로 아실기를 가역적으로 전달하며, 세포 내 구획에서 acylCoA/CoA 비율을 조절합니다. CRAT mRNA의 다양한 세포 내 위치는 CRAT 유전자의 대체 스플라이싱 결과로 나타나며, 세 가지 이소폼이 존재합니다. 그중 하나는 N-말단 미토콘드리아 전이 펩타이드를 포함하여 미토콘드리아에 위치합니다.
