Target Information
This gene encodes the coagulation factor XIII A subunit. Coagulation factor XIII is the last zymogen to become activated in the blood coagulation cascade. Plasma factor XIII is a heterotetramer composed of two A subunits and two B subunits. The A subunits have catalytic function, while the B subunits act as plasma carrier molecules. Platelet factor XIII consists only of two A subunits identical to those in plasma. Upon activation by thrombin and calcium ions, the B subunits dissociate, producing the active enzyme factor XIIIa. This enzyme functions as a transglutaminase, catalyzing crosslinking between fibrin molecules to stabilize the clot and crosslinking alpha-2-plasmin inhibitor or fibronectin to fibrin chains. Factor XIII deficiency can lead to bleeding disorders, poor wound healing, and recurrent miscarriage.
