Target Information

Protein C is a vitamin K-dependent plasma glycoprotein that is cleaved to its activated form by the thrombin-thrombomodulin complex. Activated Protein C contains a serine protease domain and degrades activated coagulation factors V and VIII, thus inhibiting blood coagulation.
It is produced in the liver and consists of two polypeptide chains. The 62 kDa proenzyme is activated by thrombin bound to an endothelial receptor, producing a 55 kDa active enzyme. Normal plasma concentrations are approximately 1–3 ng/mL for the active enzyme and about 3 µg/mL for the proenzyme due to rapid turnover.
Mutations in the Protein C gene are associated with thrombophilia, neonatal purpura fulminans, and recurrent venous thrombosis.
