Target Information
Epithelial sodium channels (ENaC) are amiloride-sensitive members of the Degenerin/epithelial sodium channel (Deg/ENaC) superfamily of ion channels. These channels share structural similarities, including two short intracellular termini, two transmembrane segments, and a large extracellular loop with a conserved cysteine-rich region. ENaC has three homologous isoforms (alpha, beta, gamma) and plays an essential role in sodium and fluid balance in the kidney, lung, and colon. It mediates aldosterone-dependent sodium reabsorption in the distal nephron, thereby regulating blood pressure. Mutations in ENaC subunits are associated with Liddle’s syndrome and pseudohypoaldosteronism (PHA-1).
