Target Information
The galectins are a family of beta-galactoside-binding proteins involved in modulating cell–cell and cell–matrix interactions. Differential and in situ hybridization indicate that this lectin is specifically expressed in keratinocytes. It is expressed at all stages of epidermal differentiation, particularly in basal and suprabasal layers, and mainly found in stratified squamous epithelium. Expression is moderately repressed by retinoic acid. The antigen localizes to basal keratinocytes and, at lower levels, to suprabasal layers where it concentrates at cell-to-cell contact areas. Its cellular localization and down-regulation in cultured keratinocytes imply a role in cell–cell and/or cell–matrix interactions necessary for normal growth control.
