Target Information

The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the E2F family of transcription factors. The E2F family plays a crucial role in the control of the cell cycle and the action of tumor suppressor proteins. It is also a target of transforming proteins of small DNA tumor viruses.

E2F proteins contain several evolutionarily conserved domains:

  • DNA binding domain
  • Dimerization domain (interaction with DP proteins)
  • Transactivation domain enriched in acidic amino acids
  • Tumor suppressor protein association domain embedded within the transactivation domain

E2F1, along with E2F2 and E2F3, possesses an additional cyclin binding domain. E2F1 binds preferentially to retinoblastoma protein (pRB) in a cell-cycle dependent manner and can mediate both cell proliferation and p53-dependent/independent apoptosis.
