Target Information
Interleukins are a broad family of cytokines primarily derived from hematopoietic cells. These small soluble proteins regulate immune system functions and mediate inflammatory responses.
IL-25 (also known as SF20/IL-25) is a secreted bone marrow stroma-derived growth factor cytokine from Th2 T-cells. It belongs to the IL-17 cytokine family and amplifies allergic-type inflammatory responses by acting on other cell types.
IL-25 binds to mouse thymic shared antigen-1 and supports lymphoid cell proliferation. Infusion of IL-25 induces IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13 gene expression, leading to epithelial cell hyperplasia, mucus secretion, and airway hyperreactivity.
This suggests IL-25 may play a key role in allergic disease through induction of IL-4, IL-5, IL-13, and eotaxin.
