Target Information
Crystallins are divided into two main classes: taxon-specific (enzyme) and ubiquitous types. The ubiquitous crystallins are the major structural proteins of the vertebrate eye lens, maintaining transparency and refractive index. Lens fiber cells lose their nuclei during development, so crystallins synthesized early in life are retained, making them highly stable proteins.
Mammalian lens crystallins are categorized into alpha, beta, and gamma families, with beta and gamma forming a superfamily. Gamma-crystallins are monomeric, symmetrical proteins that lack connecting peptides and terminal extensions, and are regulated differently after early development.
The CRYGS gene encodes a gamma-crystallin that is abundant in adult eye lens tissue and has been implicated in cataract formation due to aging or genetic mutations.
