Target Information
Arylalkylamine N-Acetyltransferase (AANAT) is the penultimate enzyme in melatonin synthesis. Hormonal melatonin plays a key role in sleep and circadian rhythm regulation. Changes in AANAT abundance are linked to day/night variations in melatonin synthesis in the pineal gland and retina. Most studies indicate AANAT activity is regulated by steady-state protein levels, but recent findings suggest additional mechanisms may influence melatonin production independently of AANAT protein quantity or activity.
