Target Information
Vitamin K epoxide reductase complex subunit 1 (VKORC1) is an enzyme responsible for reducing vitamin K 2,3-epoxide to its enzymatically active form, essential for blood clotting. The reduced form of vitamin K is required for the carboxylation of glutamic acid residues in certain clotting proteins. Vitamin K deficiency or inhibition by warfarin can cause fatal bleeding, and VKORC1 is sensitive to warfarin. Mutations in this gene are associated with deficiencies in vitamin-K-dependent clotting factors and warfarin resistance in humans and rats.
