Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene acts as a transcriptional activator for several genes including insulin, somatostatin, glucokinase, islet amyloid polypeptide, and glucose transporter type 2. It is a nuclear protein involved in early pancreatic development and plays a major role in the glucose-dependent regulation of insulin gene expression. Defects in this gene can cause pancreatic agenesis, leading to early-onset insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) or maturity-onset diabetes of the young type 4 (MODY4).
