Glutamate receptors mediate most excitatory neurotransmission in the brain and play an important role in neural plasticity, development, and neurodegeneration.
Ionotropic glutamate receptors are divided into NMDA and kainate/AMPA receptors, both containing glutamate-gated, cation-specific ion channels.
Kainate/AMPA receptors, composed of subunits GluR1–7, are co-localized with NMDA receptors and responsible for fast excitatory neurotransmission by glutamate, whereas NMDA receptors exhibit slower kinetics and higher Ca²⁺ permeability.
