Target Information
Metallothionein (MT) is a sulfhydryl- and cysteine-rich protein found in microorganisms, plants, and all invertebrate and vertebrate animals. These low-molecular-weight proteins play roles in cell growth, repair, and differentiation.
They are primarily involved in metal ion detoxification, protecting cells from toxicity caused by cadmium, mercury, and copper.
As an acute phase or stress-response protein and free radical scavenger, Metallothionein is associated with inflammation and protection from reactive oxygen species, ionizing radiation, pharmacological agents, and mutagens.
It is expressed broadly in heart, liver, kidney, breast, and testis tissues.
