Target Information
Potassium channels are ubiquitously expressed proteins with roles in both excitable and non-excitable cells. The large conductance, calcium-activated potassium channel (Maxi K+) is unique in that its activation depends on both intracellular calcium levels and membrane depolarization. This dual activation is enabled by its structural composition—a Maxi K+ alpha homotetramer containing voltage sensor and calcium-binding domains. In vascular smooth muscle, a beta-subunit associates in a 1:1 ratio, reducing the calcium concentration needed for channel opening by 5–10 fold.
