Target Information
iNOS (Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase, NOS) is an enzyme responsible for the synthesis of nitric oxide (NO), a gaseous free radical that functions as a signaling molecule involved in vasorelaxation, neurotransmission, and immune responses.
iNOS expression is inducible in various cell types, including macrophages, hepatocytes, synoviocytes, and smooth muscle cells, typically in response to cytokines such as IFN-γ, TNF, IL-1, IL-2, and LPS.
The enzyme catalyzes the oxidation of L-arginine to produce L-citrulline and NO. It contains binding domains for calmodulin, NADPH, FAD, and FMN.
Dysfunction of iNOS has been associated with diseases such as achalasia and impotence. Three related iNOS pseudogenes are located within the Smith-Magenis syndrome region on chromosome 17.
