Target Information
IL-1 alpha (Interleukin-1 alpha) is a proinflammatory cytokine expressed by monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. It is encoded by the IL1A gene and signals through two receptors, IL-1RI and IL-1RII, shared with IL-1 beta. The IL1A gene is located on chromosome 2q13.
IL-1 alpha plays a key role in innate host defense by inducing other proinflammatory cytokines and initiating acute-phase responses. Its activity is regulated by IL-1 Receptor Antagonist (IL-1RA), which inhibits receptor binding. IL-1 alpha is involved in immune responses, inflammation, and hematopoiesis, and is produced as a proprotein that is processed and released upon cell injury to induce apoptosis. It regulates NF-kappaB and MAPK pathways, stimulates IL6 and COX-2 expression, and enhances nitric oxide production. Elevated IL-1 alpha levels are linked to chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and multiple sclerosis.
